Carpet Fibers Explained
Nylon Carpet Fibers
Nylon is the most versatile carpet fiber, providing excellent durability. It is the most commonly used fiber and is used in both cut pile and loop pile styles. Nylon has great color flexibility as well as uniformity. Many nylon carpets are exceptionally soft. Most nylon carpets have a stain-resistant treatment for protection against household spills and stains.
Polyester (PET) Carpet Fibers
Polyester offers exceptional softness and color clarity. It is naturally stain and fade resistant. Polyester is not as inherently durable as nylon, many carpets made of polyester fiber perform very well. Polyester carpet is a good choices for low to medium traffic settings like bedrooms and are a good value.
Polypropylene (olefin) Carpet Fibers
Unlike other fibers, polypropylene doesn’t absorb water, so it is solution- dyed. Solution dyeing is a process in which color is built into the fiber when it is formed making the color an inherent part of the fiber. This means that the color will not fade, even when exposed to intense sunlight, bleach, or other harsh chemicals/elements. It is normally used in loop pile construction in which there is less need for resiliency because it is not as strong as other fibers.
